After enduring a losing streak that threatened to push us out of playoff contention, with a 2-1 win over the Boston Bruins last night, the Lightning have now reeled off four wins in their last 5 games. Sometimes all that is needed is a good home stand to cure all your teams woes.
We have been bashing Alex Tanguay all year on this site, but he came up with a big goal in Saturday nights win over the Atlanta Thrashers, and scored a big goal last night in the win. Kurtis Foster had 2 assists, Vinny 4 had an assist, Stammer had an assist and Marty St Louis contibuted what turned out to be the game winner.
Mike Smith has put together two good games in a row, and has won 3 of his last 4 outings. He stopped 31 of 32 shots and survived a 16 shot barage in the third period, allowing only one goal to veteran Marco Sturm.
Tim Thomas was great for the Bruins stopping 37 of 39 shots, but it wasn’t enough as the Bolts came out victorious.
“We just beat a pretty good hockey team,” Smith said. “We’re fighting right now to get into the playoffs, so every game is big for us, especially in our conference.”
Some other tidbits.
Riku Helenius who was called up for Saturday’s game vs the Trashers was sent back down to Norfolk. Apparently he was there because Antero Nittymaki’s wife was having a child. I was speculating on Saturday that we might be showing off Smitty for one of the last times, as their have been lots of Mike Smith rumors floating around the interwebs, but that’s the problem with speculation, it’s normally wrong!
Zenon Konopka got into his league leading 16th fight last night. The next closest fighter is Paul Bissonnette with 13.
Konopka also upped his PIM total to 144, leading the league by a whopping 40 PIM. The good thing is they are mostly fighting majors. He ranks 90th in the league in minor penalties received. I love that guy.
