4-1 is Fantastic

So the Bolts have started the season 4-1. Is anyone really surprised? I am not. I’m not saying we are winning the division, or the Stanley Cup, but I feel we are a way better team then we were at any point last season, and its only 5 games into the season. Here are a few reasons why we have been successful so far.

1. Our Power Play is second in the league at 33%. We have 8 Power Play goals, 4 of which came last night against the Dallas Stars.  Both Stammers and Downie have 2 PP goals a piece. On the flip side of this, our Penalty Kill has played well also. At 90%, we are 2nd in the league on the PK.

2. Steven Stamkos. He is one of the reasons. I get speechless when I think about this kid. I’m so pumped about the future of our franchise with this him here! He is one of the top 3 players in the league. Debate that. He has 9 points in the first 5 games, with 5 goals and 4 assists. I wonder when Steve Yzerman will get his extension inked. Hopefully tomorrow…

3. We have taken an inordinate amount of shots per game so far. It seems like Guy Boucher thinks that if the puck is put towards the net, good things will happen. He is right. We are 6th in the league for goals scored, and 3rd in average shots per game. I think we would be first in shots if we didn’t play terribly against the Panthers.

Our goal tending is still a question mark. Mike Smith, with a 3-0 record so far, has a 3.44 Goals Against Average, with a measly .869 Save Percentage. He gave up a goal late last night after he left the crease to play the puck. I’m not the person who will be mad about that, because I think him playing the puck creates more positive chances then negative ones. You might say “Hey douche, he is 3-0, what are you complaining about?”  And to that I say you have a point, but here is mine. If our offense had not score 14 goals in those 3 games, it could easily be 0-3. Just saying…

4-1 is a fantastic start, and my brother and I are excited about our 3 week long business trip ending so we can come home and watch some of this face paced action in person. GO BOLTS!
