Smith Clears Waivers, Heads to Norfolk

Smith will report to the Norfolk Admirals of the AHL

We  all saw this coming, as one goaltender had to move after the acquisition of Dwayne Roloson.  It seems that player has been chosen, and it is Mike Smith.  Smith was put on waivers yesterday and cleared today.  He was then assigned to Norfolk of the AHL.  It seems as though the Lightning are going to bury both his cap hit and his play in the minors until his contract runs out July 1st.  He will then be an unrestricted free agent.

When Smith returned from injury, the Lightning found themselves in an undesireable situation with three goaltenders.  It became clear that either Smith or Dan Ellis would have to be moved, and after delaying the decision with a 14 day AHL conditioning stint for Smith, the organization decided he would be the goalie to move.

Was it the right call? Should it be Ellis being buried in the minors and not Smith? Share your thoughts in the comments!
