Entering the first-round series with the Penguins, the Lightning had just one goal: to win. Well, in Game 7, it took them only one goal to send the Pittsburgh Penguins to the golf course. It was a back-and-forth goaltending duel that was eventually won by Dwayne Roloson and the Lightning’s air-tight defense.
The Penguins really, really missed Crosby and Malkin in this series. Their offense had to dig deep and fight for every goal, and in the end they just didn’t have enough steam to keep up with the Lightning.
The Bolts played a physical, disciplined, grinding game all series. They adjusted to the Pens style and they beat them at their own game. Their offense blew the Pens out of the water, and that is something the Lightning are going to have to hold on to if they want any chance against Washington.
But more on that tomorrow. Tomorrow, we’ll have our full series preview. Tomorrow we’ll look to the future. But tonight, enjoy the win. Enjoy advancing. Eight teams didn’t get to do it. Tonight we celebrate.
Tomorrow, it’s back to business.
4 down, 12 to go.
