Around The League In 30 Days: Montreal

We don’t have to like them, but we sure can respect them. Although I bet the “royal” Habs would like every team (and their fans) to bow down to them and their 24 Stanley Cup titles. We won’t go there… all we care about is the here and now hockey! It’s the 21st century, and no one here in Bolts Nation is going to fear a team that won the Cup last in the 1992-93 season. We will, however, take a look at what our “friends” to the north have been up to this off-season, and see just what they’ve been up to in trying to gear up for another playoff run.

For starters, they’ve continued adding size to their roster: “For many years the Canadiens have been looking for size and strength. By adding Gionta, Cammaleri and Gomez in 09, that clearly wasn’t the case. But it all started July 1st, when the Canadiens signed Erik Cole to a 4 year, $18M pact. In the next coming weeks, Montreal signed grinders Mike Blunden and Zack Fitzgerald, and defenceman Jeff Woywitka. Cole is expected to be a solid top 6 forward, while the other 3 are not expected to do much.”

They’ve also got better than average goal-tending with Carey Price, but I for one don’t really see him as a Dryden, Roy, or Brodeur just yet. Don’t worry though, I’m sure he’ll be all that and a bag of potato chips in the next year or so!
