Tampa Bay Lightning ended their 5 game losing streak by winning in a shootout against the New York Rangers on Thursday night.
Thursday morning news broke that Marty St. Louis, one of the stars of the team, was accidentally hit in the face with a puck during practice by teammate Dominic Moore. Thursday night, St. Louis was supposed to play in his 500th consecutive game. Unfortunately, as the day grew late, fans around the world learned of the severity of St. Louis‘ injury. St. Louis suffered swelling, bleeding, nasal, & facial fractures and will be sent back to Tampa to undergo more medical procedures.
As the game approached, and several players out with injuries (Nate Thompson, Pavel Kubina, Mattias Ohlund, Marty St. Louis), winning the game appeared to be hopeless. And most, if not all, fans were hoping that the Lightning would win it for Marty.
Ryan Callahan opened up the scoring 7:49 in the first period, and Ryan Malone tied it up 11:23 in the second period. However, when Artem Anisimov of the New York Rangers brought the score to 2-1 in the second period all hell broke loose after a taunt, where he proceeded to pretend as if he was shooting toward Mathieu Garon‘s net with his hockey stick. It did not bode well with the members of the Tampa Bay Lightning, as Vinny Lecavalier and other members of the team, including Steve Downie who was not in play, went after players on the Rangers, which resulted in a slew of penalties. 38 penalty minutes were assessed to both sides after the brawl.
In my opinion, Anisimov‘s taunt, which was supposed to be a goal celebration was an absolute distasteful and classless move to make. Both teams are criticizing his disrespectful antics. Rangers head coach, John Tortorella, expresses remorse and says that Artem Anisimov has since apologized to the Lightning, but the Lightning were not as gracious and forgiving.
In the third period, Dominic Moore tied up the game with a shorthanded goal with 1:57 left in regulation, which then forced an overtime. No goals were scored during overtime, therefore a shootout was imminent. The game ended with a shootout, with Garon making some great saves. Again, Dominic Moore, fired another shot past Lundqvist ending the 5 game losing streak and winning the game 3-2.
The three star selections were Dominic Moore, Henrik Lundqvist, and Ryan Malone. The Tampa Bay Lightning, including the lower line, really stepped up the plate tonight and won it for Marty.
*St. Louis may be out 6-8 weeks due to his injury he suffered today, and the Bolts By The Bay staff would like to wish Marty a speedy recovery, as well as send our thoughts & prayers to him during his recovery.*
