Over 50 Years Of Rivalry: Bowman VS Quinn

There’s no doubt about it, Scotty Bowman is one of the most, if not THE most, beloved names in NHL coaching history. He still holds the record for the most wins. In his eight year stretch with the RedWings, he lead them to three Stanley Cup wins. In 2002 he retired with an NHL record nine Stanley Cup Championships and one thousand, two hundred and fourty-four game wins under his belt. He is now seventy-eight years old and still working with the NHL as a consultant with the Chicago Blackhawks, which he left Detroit for to work along side his son.

Pat Quinn isn’t someone to laugh at himself, as he holds fourth in the most wins as an NHL coach. He is now sixty-nine years old. He has mentioned that he too would like to return to the NHL, perhaps as a senior adviser with a hockey club.

Scotty Bowman and Pat Quinn are set to go head to head once again as rival coaches in the 2013 NHL Winter Classic Alumni Game. Bowman, of course, will be coaching the Redwings. This will be his first appearance in Detroit since he left the team to go to Chicago. Quinn will be leading the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Bowman and Quinn first met over fifty years ago. In 1958 Scotty Bowman was in his first year of coaching in Peterborough, and Pat Quinn was a rookie defenseman with the Hamilton Tiger Cubs. They have come to be respectful rivals since. Including three All-Star Games, the two have been on opposing benches coaching thirty-three games. While Bowman man be the winningest coach, Quinn has more wins of those thirty-three with a 14-12-4 (of the regular thirty NHL games) record.

The two have quite a bit in common, aside their love and dedication to the sport. They are both two-time Jack Adams Award winners. They are both on the Hockey Hall Of Fame selection board. (Please, someone whisper in their ear about Dave Andreychuk while they’re together.) They have both been given the prestigious Order Of Canada award.

With impressive rosters and an even more impressive coaching staff, this Alumni Winter Classic game will prove to be very entertaining. I pray that they show it on tv for those of us miles away!
