Now the NHL is saying that they are done making proposals at this point. Yeah, because the last proposals were so great that they accomplished a lot!!! (Sarcasm.) The Union is not innocent in this, so don’t get your britches in a ruffle thinking I’m taking sides. Because I’m not. Both sides are being ridiculous. And even if I did have an opinion as to who’s fault it is, as I’m sure that every one of you reading this has one, we don’t truly know what is going on. Not behind closed doors. We know what we’re being told in the media. We know what we’re being told by the faces of the NHL and the NHLPA are telling us. One side is telling us nothing, the other side is giving almost too much information, making themselves look like the innocent victims. Both sides are blaming the other side, and it’s all a big show. SHUT UP ALREADY. Jeez.
The rumors are that they will be canceling games up until December 15th next, and then the next step will be the whole season. Duh… now don’t panic, I said rumors. With that said, I think that we all know what is happening. The season is lost, and just like the seats in the picture to the left, seats around forums across the NHL will remain empty. Forum workers will continue to lose paychecks. Small local businesses will continue to close. Children will keep going hungry, because they don’t want to keep talking and get a deal done. No, I am not exaggerating. I have a friend who’s a widowed single mother, working two jobs to make ends meet. She is employed at an NHL forum and a local restaurant. The restaurant booms when the baseball season is happening, but it’s not baseball season. Not much happening with the NFL to allow her to pay her bills, and with no NHL season, the place is really hurting. She fears being laid off. As it is, she has no work at the forum that she works at. Not all forums are constantly bringing in concerts and circuses and rodeos and conventions like Tampa’s. With that said, Tampa’s forum workers are hurting, too.
I’m seriously starting to wonder about next season. Yes, you read that right. If they can’t come to terms right now, not even to make another proposal… well, what’s going to change over the summer? Unless you’re an optimist like the delusional Wayne Gretzky, who says they’ll probably have a deal done in four to six weeks, making an early start in 2013. I pray he’s right, but I fear he’s taken way too many pucks to the head. Mr. Gretzky, whatever you are smoking, would you share please?
p.s. I promise that I don’t do drugs.
