The NHL and the NHLPA met with mediators from the U.S. Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service today. They are expected to meet again tomorrow. FMCS has requested a media blackout for the meetings. They are even meeting in an unknown location. The league honored their wishes and said nothing. The union’s Donald Fehr issued the following statement:
“A small group of NHLPA staff and players met today with two experienced FMCS mediators. We expect that these discussions will resume on Thursday.”
Though the players have agreed to the 50/50 split of the hockey related revenue, they are asking for $393 million to compensate for previously signed contracts. The owners have agreed to give $211 million. However, that number may dwindle due to the loss that they are taking every day. According to Gary Bettman, the owners are losing $18-$20 million a day. The players are losing $8-$10 million a day. A DAY. That’s just crazy. And they say that hockey players are the least paid of the 4 major leagues?
