Twitter and Facebook have been blowing up with posts about the potential end to the lockout. By appearance you would think that it was official and the guys were on planes tonight heading back to their cities, ready to strap on their skates and start camp this Wednesday. But the reality of it is that it’s not. It’s almost but not quite.
Just past 5am this morning, a very tired but smiling Gary Bettman and exhausted looking Donald Fehr walked out of a meeting in a Manhattan hotel that lasted over 16 hours to announce that they have agreed to the terms of a new CBA. The framework is in place. What does this mean? It doesn’t mean that we can jump for joy and set our schedules just yet. They have to draw up and finalize the legal details and get it down on paper. Then the CBA must be ratified the majority of the union, which has about 740 members, and the league’s 30 Board Of Governors. I am hearing that it will probably be a done deal by Wednesday. At this point it is very unlikely that it won’t pass through.
I have to admit, when I heard the news this morning I did my own little happy dance. However, nothing is set in stone and as they say it’s not over until the fat lady sings. I haven’t received the call to sing yet. Trust me, that is something that you don’t want to hear. (You can hear how horrible it is on a few of my parodies that haven’t been taken down from my personal youtube channel.)
When it’s announced I will be singing loud and proud. I just hope that no one hears!
