It was a day that I remember all too well. I was sitting in my seat, yelling at the top of my lungs, wishing I was within throwing distance of Chris Pronger. I’m talking about, what many call, the day hockey stood still. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, Youtube it. There are several different videos of different shots of that ridiculous game where the Philadelphia Flyers refused to move the puck in an attempt to avoid the 1-3-1 defensive system. No matter how many times the Flyers will play at the Tampa Bay times Forum, that will always be the game that I remember the most.
Tonight the Bolts host the Flyers again. While Tampa is 3-1-0 with 6 points so far this season the Flyers are 2-3-0 with 4 points. Mathieu Garon has let in 1 goal, 1 win, 0 losses, a GAA of 01.00, and a save percentage of .972. Anders Lindback has 3 goals allowed, 2 wins, 1 loss, a GAA of 03.67 and a save percentage of .900. Philly has yet to use their back up goaltender, Michael Leighton, but Ilya Brizgalov (who I think is overrated) has allowed 5 goals, has 2 wins, 3 losses, has a GAA of 02.22, and a save percentage of .923. This will be the first of three match-ups between the teams. During their last meeting Steven Stamkos scored a hattrick.
Steven Stamkos and Cory Conacher are looking to continue their 4 game point streaks. Martin St. Louis has scored 52 points in 41 games against the Flyers. Matt Carle played 308 games with Philadelphia over 4 seasons. Andrej Meszaros played with Tampa for two seasons in 2008-2009 and in 2009-2010. Ruslan Fedotenko wore Bolt Blue for 4 seasons from 2002-2007. Bruno Gervais was with the Lightning last season. Though only here for a short while, he quickly became a fan favorite. Tampa Bay Lightning Assistant Coach Dan LaCroix spent 2 season playing with the Flyers, from 1996-1998. Jody Shelly and Martin St. Louis played together in the AHL for the Saint John Flames from 1997-2000. Sami Salo and Kimmo Timonen spent time in Finland playing for the TPS Turku from 1994-1997.
With the Flyers coming off of a 3 point losing streak and winning their last two, tonight should be a great match up. I just hope that they move the puck down the ice.
