Stars Collide as Steven Stamkos and Sidney Crosby Face Off in Pittsburgh

Tonight’s matchup is poised to be the game to watch tonight. Star forwards Steven Stamkos and Sidney Crosby face off as the Tampa Bay Lightning head out to face the Pittsburgh Penguins at the CONSOL Energy Center in Pittsburgh.

Both offense leaders in the league, Stamkos and Crosby have been wowing their fans all season long. Steven Stamkos currently leads the NHL in Goals Scored with 15. Crosby is currently ranked 13th with 10 goals. On the other side, Sidney Crosby leads the league in Points with 34. Don’t count Stamkos out, though. He is ranked #2, closely following Crosby with 32 points.

Both of them have a Maurice “Rocket” Richard trophy under their belts. Stamkos and Crosby even shared that honor in the 2009-10 NHL Season with 51 goals apiece. In the 2011-12 season, Steven Stamkos won the honor once again as he netted his first 60 goal season.

The Lightning are currently riding a four game losing streak. However, tonight may be the night that the Lightning gets back on track. Steven Stamkos is currently on a nine-game point streak, registering 8 goals and 15 points. This is currently the longest in the league. Martin St. Louis also has 9 points in the last 10 games. St. Louis is also on Crosby’s heels for the lead in the NHL for Assists; Crosby has 24, St. Louis has 21.

As far as the Penguins are concerned, they just recently snapped a two game losing streak of their own with a very close game that they ultimately won 7-6 OT on Saturday against the  Montreal Canadiens. Penguins LW Chris Kunitz has points in the five straight games.

The Tampa Bay Lightning are currently 9-11-1 on the season, while the Pittsburgh Penguins are currently in the lead of the Atlantic Division of the Eastern on Conference at 14-8-0.

Like I said before, tonight’s game has the potential to shake the whole system up. When two players who are racing for the lead go head-to-head, only one of them can come out on top.

Who do you think will lead the NHL in goals and points when all is said and done? Do you see another Richard Trophy in Stamkos’ future? Sound off in the comments below.
