The Chicago Blackhawks and and Boston Bruins are battling in the Stanley Cup Final, and the series has essentially turned into a best of 3 series. Everyone in the hockey universe knows how strong the Chicago offense is, and also how overpowering the Boston defense is. This Final is so interesting because the teams have opposite play styles. While this is a team game, I will analyze both the Blackhawks and the Bruins and share my thoughts on each team’s most important player as the series goes into game 5.
For the defensive minded Boston Bruins, goaltender Tuukka Rask will be the key to another Stanley Cup win. The defense for the Bruins is probably the toughest in the league to score against. Adding a solid Tuukka Rask will make is seem nearly impossible to score, even for the high powered Blackhawks. In games 2 and 3, the Blackhawks were only able to manage a single goal against the Bruins, losing both games. In those two games, Task had a save percentage above 97%. However, in the games in which the Blackhawks have won, Rask posted save percentages of 94% and 87%. Still impressive, but with the Bruins not being a team designed to outscore an opponent, Rask needs to stop as many pucks as he can so his team can come out on top.
For the Blackhawks, star player and captain Jonathan Toews is the key to successfully capturing a Stanley Cup this year. He has been rather quiet for the team during this playoff run, scoring only 1o points in 21 games, while only getting a single goal against the Bruins in four games so far. For the Blackhawks, they need to see Toews heat up and contribute more offensively. Toews needs to find a way to beat the wall of defense put up by the Bruins every night in order to help his team win the Stanley Cup.
