Why Do We Love Hockey?

I know it’s the middle of summer when I wake up every morning, walk into the guest bedroom, look at the hockey memorabilia on my wall, and scratch off another day on the calendar. Is it October yet?

It’s fun to talk about free agency, trades, buy-outs and rule changes for next season. But nothing beats leaving for work in the morning, hanging your Lightning jersey in the back seat, and knowing that you won’t be home until the game is over.

And while hockey may not be ranked at the top of America’s sports popularity poll, the passion and intensity of its fans beats every other sport by a long shot. Why is that?

Not only is hockey internationally famous, it’s the “coolest game on Earth.” And it’s not just about offense, defense, scoring goals, and stopping pucks. The sport requires athletic ability, intelligence, grace, and passion.

Ask any parent why they truck their kids and their equipment to the rink at 5am because that’s the only ice-time available for practice and all they’ll talk about is how much their family loves the sport.

And you know what? Hockey players for the most part are just likeable, approachable guys who’ll talk to any fan, support charitable causes, sign autographs for hours, and get involved with community projects. And our Tampa Bay Lightning players are among the best.

If you have a special reason why you love hockey, please take a minute and leave us a comment. OK, it’s time to check off another day on the calendar. Make it a great day.
