Sin Bin Sunday's: A Hard Look At The NHL

I don’t remember the game. I don’t remember our opponent. Heck, I don’t even remember the year. But what will never escape my memory is the vision of garbage littered all over the ice at the Tampa Bay Times Forum.

The disruptive incident followed a series of outrageously bad calls against the Lightning by NHL Referee #8, Dave Jackson. Honestly, I didn’t think one official could be that blind and arrogant. And it wasn’t the first time, nor was it the last, that Dave Jackson has expressed his lack of affection for the Tampa Bay Lightning. Seriously, how does that guy keep his job?

Not to worry, Bolts Nation – Dave Jackson’s reputation for incompetent calls is widespread. Just ask Ryan Clowe.

In a Janaury game this season between San Jose and Vancouver, Clowe set a franchise mark with eight penalties in one game. He was issued minors for high-sticking and unsportsmanlike conduct at 19:33 of the second period, and a 10-minute misconduct as well as a game misconduct for repeatedly banging his stick on the penalty box door. You guessed it – Dave Jackson made those calls.

According to Ryan Clowe,

The last one was the one that put me over the edge. It was a stupid call. I tried to finish a guy and he just skated out of trouble, and I don’t even know if I got a piece of him, and the guy gives me a high stick. The other two calls before that I didn’t say anything. It was just a constant march to the penalty box that game, and it got frustrating.

Sure, maybe Clowe was guilty and Jackson made the perfect calls. Not likely, though.

Dave Jackson has a reputation for having it in for certain players and teams and neither history nor videos lie. He needs to either get his act together as a referee or retire so that the NHL can maintain its integrity by minimizing these unfortunate and often ugly incidents.

Thanks for visiting the Sin Bin on Sunday. Make it a great week.
