Syracuse Crunch Defenseman J.P. Cote Suspended for 2 Games

The American Hockey League announced today that Syracuse Crunch defenseman J.P. Cote has been suspended for 2 games.

This stems from a match penalty that was assessed in the 1st period against the Norfolk Admirals on Saturday evening at the War Memorial Arena in Syracuse. J.P. Cote was cited for an illegal check to the head of Norfolk Admirals left wing John Kurtz. Kurtz was not injured on the play.

Cote will miss his first game on Tuesday, December 10th as the Crunch take on the St. John’s IceCaps at the Mile One Centre in St. John’s, Newfoundland. The second will be the following night, also in St. John’s against the IceCaps.

Cote has suited up for 18 games so far this season with the Syracuse Crunch. In those 18 games, the 6’2” 212 pound defenseman has scored 2 goals and 7 assists for a total of 9 points with a plus-6 rating. He has 33 penalty minutes this season, making him 4th on the team for penalty minutes.

While it stinks to be down a valuable defenseman, the league has to be consistent in their enforcement of the rules, and with the amount of injuries this season in the National Hockey League due to illegal hits, they have got to crack down on the issue before someone is severely injured.
