Team Canada Names Steven Stamkos to 2014 Olympic Men’s Hockey Team

Earlier today at a press conference in Toronto, Hockey Canada unveiled the 25-man roster of players who would represent their country in the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia.

Out of all the players who would be named to the team, there is one player that Tampa Bay Lightning fans, and let’s face it, hockey fans around the world knew would be on the roster; Lightning center Steven Stamkos.

Stamkos is one of the most dangerous snipers in the National Hockey League right now, and had he not gone down to injury early in the season, would undoubtedly be giving Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby a run for his money in the points.

However, there was one notable name left off of this roster; Lightning right wing Martin St. Louis. St. Louis was left off of Team Canada’s roster in 2010 in Vancouver as well, despite going on to win as the league’s leading point scorer.

While I, as I am sure are a lot of you, are disappointed, we have to see things from Yzerman’s perspective. When it comes to Team Canada, they are in almost the same situation that the Tampa Bay Lightning are this season. There are so many talented people that are eligible for the position, and just not enough positions to go around.

Do I think that Marty would have made a better selection than some of the people that did make the roster? Of course, I do. However, I am probably a little biased with him being my favorite player and all. This is probably why it is a good reason that Steve Yzerman has to make that call and not me.
