Sochi 2014: Updated Olympic Men’s Hockey Medal Round Bracket – Semifinal Round

The time has come, ladies and gentlemen. The stage has been set for the Semifinal Round in the chase for the Gold Medal at the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia. Need help keeping track of all the exciting hockey action? Never fear, we here at Bolts By The Bay have you covered.

Here is the official FanSided Hockey Bracket for the Medal Round, which has been updated to reflect the outcome of today’s Quarterfinal Round matchups.

In the wee hours of the morning today, New York Rangers left wing Carl Hagelin and Team Sweden made short work of Team Slovenia. As a result, they will be progressing to the Semifinal Round. This means that when competition kicks back up on Friday, they will go head to head with Tampa Bay Lightning defenseman Sami Salo and Team Finland.

Speaking of Russia, Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin and the host nation, Team Russia, were officially eliminated from the competition after being defeated 3-1 by Boston Bruins goaltender Tuukka Rask and Team Finland. This means that they will be moving forward into the Semifinal Round to face off with Vancouver Canucks left wing Daniel Sedin and Team Sweden.

This brings me to the matchup between the Czech Republic and the United States. Toronto Maple Leafs right wing Phil Kessel and Team USA defeated Tampa Bay Lightning defenseman Radko Gudas and left wing Ondrej Palat by the score of 5-2. This means that Team USA will be advancing to the Semifinals. When competition kicks back up, Team USA will be going head-to-head with Nashville Predators captain Shea Weber and Team Canada.

Last, but certainly not least, we have Tampa Bay Lightning captain Martin St. Louis and Team Canada, who just squeezed past Tampa Bay Lightning and Syracuse Crunch goaltender Kristers Gudlevskis and Team Latvia by the score of 2-1. As I said previously, when the competition kicks back up on Friday, Team Canada will go face-to-face with Chicago Blackhawks right wing Patrick Kane and Team USA.

As I have said many times before, no matter which team you are pulling for or which of your favorite players has made it through to the next round of competition, there is one thing that no one can deny. The next couple of days are going to be filled with some rather intense hockey competition.

Which team are you pulling for in the competition? Has there been a player that has pulled away from the pack and really shown themselves to be the MVP of the tournament thus far? Sound off in the comments below and let us know what you think.
