NHL Trade Consumes Martin St. Louis and Viewers

Amid the swirls of rumor for the past week since Tampa Bay Lightning captain Martin St. Louis neither confirmed nor denied his leaving the team, the NHL trade deadline brought things to a head today with the ultimate confirmation that yes, indeed, he left for New York today.

I tuned in to the NHL Network to see what was going on, never intending to become so immersed in the transactions.  I texted hockey buddy Celeste about the many people who had tweeted on the network about calling in sick to work or skipping classes in order to stay home and watch the trades.  Who would do this?

Apparently I would.

All. Stinking. Day.

This morning I started the day excited to hear that Steven Stamkos passed the x-ray test and got medical clearance to start playing with the team again–Hooray! Huzzah!

Not 30 minutes later, the dam broke and we all shared the shock and dismay and anger at the news of Marty’s departure.   Lots of vitriol out there for the former team captain, and lots of speculation and mystery still surrounds the issue of why he left.

Nevertheless, I sit here with the realization that I joined the ranks of those who watched NHL intensely all day.  And I’m not even Canadian. Fortunately I didn’t have to call in sick or skip classes to do it.

Hope my family likes peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for dinner.
