Steve Yzerman Signs a Four-Year Contract Extension with the Lightning

Tampa Bay Lightning Chairman and Governor Jeff Vinik announced today via the Lightning’s official website that the organization has come to terms with Lightning Vice President and General Manager Steve Yzerman on a four-year extension of his contract.

Yzerman still has one year left on his current contract, so his new contract will begin after the completion if the current agreement.

Vinik has nothing but positive things to say about the Lightning General Manager.

“Since the day Steve agreed to serve as our vice president and general manager, he has worked tirelessly to transform our hockey department and establish the groundwork for sustained success”, Vinik said in the release. “We are very pleased with Steve’s job performance thus far, and I am fully confident Steve remains the right person to continue to lead us.”

At the same time, Yzerman thanked Vinik for the opportunity and as well as expressed his excitement for the future of the franchise.

“I’m grateful for the opportunity to continue the process we started four years ago and would like to thank Jeff Vinik for entrusting me with the responsibility of leading the Tampa Bay Lightning,” Yzerman said to the Lightning’s official site. “I’m very excited about what lies ahead for our organization and truly enjoy working with a fantastic group of people in Tampa Bay.”

Since 2010 when Yzerman first joined the organization as General Manager, the Lightning have made it to the Stanley Cup Playoffs on two occasions, including the current season.

While some of us here in the Bolts Nation have questioned some of the decisions that Yzerman has made in his time with the organization, there is no denying that he has brought in one of the strongest rookie classes in all of the National Hockey League, and that each and every one of them have risen to the task in order to get the team to where they are right now.

What do you think of Vinik’s decision to extend Yzerman’s contract? Are you looking forward to another five years with Yzerman at the helm? Let us know what you think in the comments below.
