Tampa Bay Lightning Acquire Jason Garrison

The Tampa Bay Lightning have just acquired Defenseman Jason Garrison from the Vancouver Canucks for their second round pick in tonight’s NHL Draft.

Garrison, 6’2” Left handed defenseman played the last two seasons in Vancouver after playing four years down the road in Sunrise, Florida for the Florida Panthers.

He definitely has the size of an effective defenseman.  Jason Garrison played 81 games last year for the Canucks and had 7 goals and 33 points for Vancouver.

The 29 year old Garrison is in his 6th year in the NHL.  This deal definitely bolsters the Tampa Defense corps. Although they have a plethora of left handed sticks on defense, there is no doubt that the blue liners are stronger with Garrison in the fold.

G.M. Steve Yzerman pulled off this deal, which still leaves the Bolts with seven picks, including two first rounders in the NHL Draft.  The Lightning have an abundance of forwards, so the cupboards are full for Yzerman to continue working the phones for another trade or two.  The trade bringing in Jason Garrison could be the tip of the iceberg this weekend.

Jason Garrison will be a very good fit on the Lightning.  He brings a strong offensive game as a defenseman which seems to be the kind of D-man that fits into Coach Jon Cooper’s style well.  I look for some great things from Jason Garrison in the years to come.  The deal also includes the rights to Jeff Costello and Vancouver’s 7th round pick in next year’s draft.
