The 2014 NHL Draft is well underway, and the Tampa Bay Lightning has certainly been taking a defensive stance in this year’s festivities. The next pick is in, and the Tampa Bay Lightning has selected defenseman Johnathan MacLeod with the 57th overall pick in the 2014 NHL Draft.
Tampa Bay Lightning Vice President and General Manager Steve Yzerman has shown that he has a strong commitment to sealing some of the holes that the Lightning have in their defense right now.
One of those players that will help complete this mission is Johnathan MacLeod.
According to David Gregory of NHL Central Scouting, MacLeod is a good, mobile skater who is tough to play against.
“He closes gaps quickly and is tough to play against. He’s a good, mobile skater who likes to move the puck. He’ll finish his checks and knock you through the boards if he could.”
He is also being described as a hard-nosed, shutdown defenseman. I think we can all agree that this is something the Lightning are in desperate need of; especially if we want to be able to go toe to toe with some of the more physical teams in the league like the Boston Bruins.
Much like Dominik Masin, who was selected by the Tampa Bay Lightning with the 35th overall pick, MacLeod has leadership experience of his own.
MacLeod led Team USA to the Bronze Medal when he served as captain in the 2013 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge. He also won a gold medal with Team USA in the 2014 Under-18 World Championship.
Yzerman is making a real statement with his commitment to the defensive core this year. This is something I am sure that everyone here in the Bolts Nation can appreciate.
As most of you know, Development Camp is right around the corner. With the addition of all the young defensemen to the organization this year, you can bet your bottom dollar that the competition is going to be at an all-time high.
Each and every one of them is going to be looking to make their mark and start their journey in the National Hockey League. One of the players looking to start that journey is going to be Johnathan MacLeod.
What are your thoughts on this young defenseman? What do you think he will bring to the table when he takes his place within the Lightning organization? Let us know what you think in the comments below.
