The first round of the 2014 NHL Draft was definitely an interesting one of the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Lightning Vice President and General Manager Steve Yzerman seemed to be an absolute wheeling and dealing machine.
Over the course of yesterday, Yzerman managed to acquire a defenseman, the rights to a forward, and a 7th round pick in the 2015 NHL Draft all for our second round pick in the 2014 NHL Draft; and that was before the draft even started.
Then, while the draft was still underway, the Lightning organization announced that they had come to terms with rookie defenseman Mark Barberio on a one-year one-way contract.
From there, it was back to the races at the Draft where he picked up a high risk, yet potentially high profit, defenseman with our 19th overall pick by the name of Anthony Deangelo of the Sarnia Sting in the Ontario Hockey League.
It was then that Yzerman would make his final move of the night by trading our twenty eighth overall pick in the first round to the New York Islanders in exchange for the 35th and 57th overall picks, which fell in the second round.
This brings us to the third round. The Lightning only have one pick in this round, which falls in the 80th overall position. What will this pick bring us? I guess we’ll have to watch and find out.
In the meantime, here is a look at the complete selection order for the third round of the 2014 NHL Draft.
