So amid the lockout and all of the frustrations surrounding it, it has been quite difficult to come up with things to entertain you, the reader, with. I’m sure you all have grown tired of hearing about the lockout, and just want to see hockey be played. Of course, that is not the case. However, as I was brainstorming hockey topics this morning, the topic of hockey masks came up. A week ago, while watching a recording of the last Lightning game against the Jets in which Steven Stamkos scored his 60th goal, my significant other exclaimed “Nice mask!” as the camera zoomed into Roloson for a close-up. I agreed, and have begun pondering what other goalies have nice hardware protecting their face. What you will see here is my selection of a few goalie masks that I find interesting. There is no particular order to these masks, they are just a few that I enjoy or have enjoyed seeing.

Marc-Andre Fleury’s Winter Classic mask was simple and crisp. I love the baby blue color and the jawline accent.

As if Tim Thomas isn’t intimidating enough on his own, he’s got a mask here that will send chills down your spine.

If Darth Vader played hockey he would be Jonas Hiller…

We are all suffering from the effects of Offseason Hockey Withdrawals. We check Lightning.NHL.Com for any news or information or anything Lightning related. We scan NHL.com for any new hockey news. Heck, last season I was suffering so badly that I’d walk through the mall and just yell ROLI! ROLI! ROLI! for kicks. (People look at you really strange when you do that.) I got way too excited to see a package of Rolos in Cracker Barrel. This year, the withdrawals are horrible. However The Lightning organization is helping us pull through it by staying connected to their fans throughout the offseason. They do such a great job for fans, it’s unlike any other hockey club that I’ve heard of. It’s certainly a major step above the Buccaneers. (Like the Glazers would ever do anything comparable to Jeff Vinik and associates.)
They are doing the Chili’s radio show with player and alumni guests on different Wednesdays. They hosted a wonderful draft party for anyone who wanted to attend at Champps Americana Sports Bar And Restaurant at International Plaza in Tampa, where Dave AndreyChuk, Chris Dingman, Rick Peckham, and Bobby “The Chief” Taylor were announced to attend. They did, along with a few surprises. Alumni Lightning great Brian Bradley showed up as well, but the main event was the surprise of Adam Hall and Teddy Purcell. It was said that everyone in attendance would receive a yearbook from last year. There were so many people in attendance that they ran out. However everyone did receive an autographed photo of Teddy and Adam. The Lightning girls did a great job interacting with fans as usual. They hosted their radio show. Steve “The Big Dog” Duemig called head coach Guy Boucher live for us all to hear. They had give aways all night, ranging from bobble heads to a jersey of the first draft pick, to a player’s game used stick. Of course our season ticket reps were there circling, trying to recruit and they had 20th Anniversary T-shirts available for purchase. We got to see other fans, cheer and chant, and see friends that we don’t normally see unless it’s hockey season. This organization certainly knows how to show appreciation for their fans. They don’t make us feel like we’re on the outside of the glass looking down onto the ice, they make us feel like we are a part of the team. And for that, Tampa Bay Lightning, on behalf of all of The Thunder, I thank you. Free Agent Day is right around the corner. Prospect Camp will be here before you know it. Soon Rookie Camp, Training Camp, and poof! The preseason will be knocking at our door. There is always local hockey to watch at the Brandon Ice Sports Forum or Ellenton, just check around for the local ice rink nearest you. Even if it’s a Beer League or children’s tournaments, it’s hockey! And they need your support too.
