Steven Stamkos has surely been the center of attention in Tampa Bay and the NHL this year with his amazing sixty goal season. He’s only the twentieth NHLer to record a sixty goal season, and the first since the 2008-2009 season. He’s one of only seven players in NHL history to have two fifty goal seasons prior to their twenty-third birthday. He lead the NHL with twelve game winning goals, and set a league record with five overtime winning goals. He was responsible for twenty-six percent of the Lightning’s two hundred and thirty two goals this season.
At 7pm on the NBC Sports Network they will be airing the NHL awards live from Encore Theater at the Wynn in Las Vegas. As the league’s top scorer, Stamkos has won the Maurice “Rocket” Richard (REE-shard) Trophy. He’s also nominated for the Hart Memorial Trophy and the Ted Lindsay Award.
The Hart Memorial Trophy is awarded to the player who is player judged to be the most valuable to his team. The winner is selected by a poll of the Professional Hockey Writers’ Association in all NHL cities at the end of the regular season. This is Steven’s first nomination for this particular trophy. He is up against Pittsburgh’s Evgani Malkin and New York’s Henrik Lundqvist.
The Ted Lindsay Award is presented to the league’s “Most Valuable Player”, as voted on by fellow members of the National Hockey League Players Association. Malkin and Lundqvist are also the other nominees in this category.
In 2004, Martin St. Louis became the only player in franchise history to win both the Hart Trophy and the Lindsay Award (then known as the Lester B. Pearson Award).
Tune in tonight to watch our golden boy shine on the Las Vegas stage!
