Tampa Bay Lightning Daily Headlines: Lightning Loss, Trade Deadline

Bolts By The Bay takes a look at some of the headlines happening around the Bolts Nation and the NHL as the Tampa Bay Lightning refocus their efforts on the Buffalo Sabres.

The Tampa Bay Lightning started off the game right, but a sloppy second period ultimately led to the Lightning’s defeat as the Florida Panthers picked up the two points by the score of 4-3.

The Lightning has made short work of the Panthers in the past, but the Panthers seem to have found their footing in the later part of this season and are now legitimate contenders for a Wild Card position in the 2015 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

The one thing that seemed to be the difference maker in this encounter is the addition of veteran forward Jaromir Jagr. Jagr was involved in two of the four goals the Panthers scored tonight. Of course, as we mentioned before, the sloppy second period may have been a contributing factor as well.

Now, the Tampa Bay Lightning will have to put this loss out of their minds and refocus their efforts as they are set to take on the Buffalo Sabres on Tuesday night at the Amalie Arena to kick of a brief three-game home stand.

In the Lightning’s one day off, there will be another topic filling everyone’s mind. The NHL Trade Deadline comes to a close at 3:00 p.m. this afternoon. It was all quiet on the Lightning front, that is until the wee hours of the morning when the trades started bursting out coming out.

It seems like this morning’s trades are all part of a bigger picture. What that picture paints is yet to be seen. Thankfully, we don’t have long to wait. In the meantime, let’s take a look at some of the headlines that are looming around the Bolts Nation as well as around the National Hockey League.

As we mentioned before, the Tampa Bay Lightning suffered a rather embarrassing loss at the hands of Jaromir Jagr and the Florida Panthers. After the game, Tampa Bay Lightning Radio Announcer Dave Mishkin took a look at all the action and broke down what worked, what didn’t work, and what needs to never be done again. The Tampa Bay Lightning has been fairly quiet on the trade front until this morning. As the NHL Trade Deadline nears its closure, some people here in the Bolt Nation are wondering if the Lightning has any further plans of making a trade before the deadline. Joe Smith of the Tampa Bay Times had an opportunity to speak with Tampa Bay Lightning Vice President and General Manager Steve Yzerman about the Lightning’s plans, and he was quite clear that the Lightning would not be making a trade just to make a trade. The Tampa Bay Lightning will play host to the Buffalo Sabres tomorrow night. Of course, this is after the looming Trade Deadline. There are speculations that the Sabres still have some moves to make before the clock ticks 3:00 p.m. and the window of opportunity closes for the remainder of the season. One of those moves is said to likely involve center Torrey Mitchell. [Sabre Noise]

It seems as if the Florida Panthers has been mighty busy in the days leading to the NHL Trade Deadline. After making what seemed like the trade of the century for veteran forward Jaromir Jagr, the Panthers also made a move that involved moving left wing Tomas Fleischmann to the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for left wing Dany Heatley and a 3rd Round Draft Pick in the 2015 NHL Draft. There is some bad news for one of the Tampa Bay Lightning’s newest prospects. Mike Davies of the Peterborough Examiner is reporting that Lightning prospect Dominik Masin, who plays for the Peterborough Petes, will undergo surgery today to repair a broken orbital bone, broken collarbone, and sinus injury suffered on Thursday. As you can imagine, this will end his season. [Peterborough Examiner]

Now that we’ve taken a look at some of the top headlines around Hockey Paradise and the remainder of the NHL, we can sit back and watch as the stories of the day unfold and we see if Yzerman has any surprises in store for us today.
