The Tampa Bay Lightning has taken to social media to tease their new Adidas uniforms that will be unveiled next week.
This season will mark the first year that the NHL’s uniforms will be made by Adidas. Since 2007, Reebok has been the league’s supplier. However, starting next season, parent company Adidas will be taking care of the league’s jersey needs for at least the next 7 seasons.
The Tampa Bay Lightning have posted a few teasers of their new uniforms on Instagram and Twitter. Everything released so far can be seen below.
As part of the league transferring to Adidas jerseys, several teams jerseys will be seeing a redesign. As tradition is a big deal in hockey, it would be surprising to see an Original 6 team, such as the Boston Bruins or the Detroit Red Wings, stray too far from their storied jersey designs. For an expansion team like the Lightning, however, a redesign wouldn’t be too hard to imagine, considering the changes the team’s look has already undergone in its 25-year history.
There’s a lot of potential for a Lightning redesign. The league-wide tagline of “Form The Future” and what’s been revealed in the teaser video suggest a sleek and futuristic look to the new jerseys. This is illustrated by the sharp lines and precise cut seen. It’d be bittersweet to see the jerseys we’ve come to love over the past few seasons go, but a sleeker, more futuristic, design could be a thing of beauty.

The new jerseys will be unveiled on June 20th. Like them or not, these will likely be the Lightning’s jerseys for the foreseeable future. No matter if the Bolts jerseys get redesigned or remain the same, they can’t be as bad as the beautiful disaster that was the 1996 “Storm” alternate jersey.
