Tampa Bay Lightning defenseman Mikhail Sergachev brings home his first NHL goal in the first period against the Columbus Blue Jackets.
The Tampa Bay Lightning has made a habit of setting records so far this season. Of course, much of this has come off the stick of Lightning forward Nikita Kucherov, who has scored a goal in each of the Bolts seven games so far this season. This time, it was another player who etched his name into Lightning history.
In the first period of play, it seemed as if this encounter would come down to a battle of the goaltenders. There was a lot of back-and-forth between these two teams, but ultimately it was the Tampa Bay Lightning who would pierce the veil of Blue Jackets netminder Sergei Bobrovsky and strike first blood.
The Lightning was battling for possession of the puck behind the Blue Jackets net. When the battle came to an end, it was Lightning forward Vladislav Namestnikov who was able to break the puck free and send it back in front of the net. Nikita Kucherov would get his stick on the puck before sending it forward to defenseman Mikhail Sergachev.
Sergachev wasted no time in pulling back his stick and firing off a one-timer. The puck would sail right past Bobrovsky on the stick side and into the back of the net. The 19-year-old goal in the first period would be the first in his young NHL career.
When the period would come to a close, Sergachev would speak to Fox Sports Sun about his first career goal. He was incredibly quick to give credit to his linemates Nikita Kucherov and Vladislav Namestnikov for setting up the shot for him. Sergachev said “all he had to do was shoot the puck.”
Well…if that’s all Sergachev needs to do in order to put the puck in the back of the net then, by all means, keep on shooting! While it is way too early to tell how Sergachev is going to progress over time, the Lightning could always use another offensively-minded defenseman like Victor Hedman in the lineup.

There is still plenty of hockey to be played tonight from the Nationwide Arena in Columbus. Who knows…maybe Sergachev will be able to pick up his second goal of the season? No one knows for sure what the future holds, but if the Tampa Bay Lightning continue to play the way they have in the first period of play, they should find themselves in a good position when the final buzzer sounds.
