As the Tampa Bay Lightning prepare to take on the Buffalo Sabres, we take a look at some of the top headlines around the National Hockey League today.

The Tampa Bay Lightning suffered a loss at the hands of the Florida Panthers on Sunday night, but thankfully they don’t have a lot of time to sit back and dwell on the loss to their in-state rivals. The Tampa Bay Lightning charges into the Amalie Arena tonight to do battle with Brian Gionta and the Buffalo Sabres.

The NHL Trade Deadline has come and gone. The Tampa Bay Lightning made a total of two moves that saw us say goodbye to two of our own as well as welcome a new member to the Tampa Bay Lightning family.

We said goodbye to right wing Brett Connolly and defenseman Radko Gudas, Connolly headed to the Boston Bruins and Gudas heading to the hard-hitting Philadelphia Flyers. In exchange for Connolly we picked up a 2015 and 2016 2nd Round Pick in the NHL Draft. In exchange for Gudas, we received defenseman Braydon Coburn.

Now that all of the pressure that comes with the trade deadline has been released, the players can refocus their effort and really put their best skates forward as we head into the final stretch of the season.

While we wait to see the sparks fly between the Lightning and the Sabres, let’s take a look at some of the top headlines going on not only here in the Bolts Nation, but the remainder of the National Hockey League as well.

As we mentioned, the NHL Trade Deadline has come and gone. When all was said and done, the Bolts came away with one new player and two new draft picks. The Chicago Blackhawks have been asking fans to tell them what their goals in life are. If they find one that they can make happen, they are doing what they can to make their dream become a reality. This is where a five year old girl by the name of Alexis comes in. Alexis’ goal is to sell Girl Scout Cookies to her favorite Chicago Blackhawks player, Jonathan Toews. Center Andrew Shaw made that happen. [Chicago Blackhawks]

The Minnesota Wild proved today that a little girl has an innate way to tug on the heartstrings of those around them. The 11 year old daughter of Minnesota Wild defenseman Jordan Leopold, who name is Jordyn, sent a letter to the Minnesota Wild coaching staff explaining how much her she missed her father and how lonely he was while playing with the Columbus Blue Jackets. The Buffalo Sabres had a bit of a scary moment last weekend as defenseman Mark Pysyk, who was recently  demoted to the Sabres AHL affiliate the Rochester Americans, suddenly collapsed during a pick up three on three basketball game. As you can imagine, the Amerks are being incredibly careful and do not want to bring Pysyk back to the ice until the doctors can be certain what caused his sudden collapse. [Sabre Noise]

Anytime a player leaves a team, whether it be through retirement, trade, or free agency, there are always going to be emotions that come with the move; especially if it is a player who has been with the same team for quite some time. The NHL Trade Deadline this year brought about some of those emotions when it came to the Philadelphia Flyers. Flyers fans have to come to terms with the fact the longtime defenseman Kimmo Timonen. Judging by the fans’ reactions, they will be missing him for quite a while. [Broad Street Buzz]
