An era of the Tampa Bay Lightning is on the verge of an abrupt end. According to NHL insider Elliotte Friedman, Nikita Kucherov has informed the team that he will not re-sign and has requested a trade.

Tampa Bay Times Lightning beat writer Eduardo Encina reached out to Kucherov’s agent, Dan Milstein, and he declined to comment.

ESPN's Emily Kaplan has also confirmed that Kucherov wants out Tampa Bay.

According to TSN's Pierre LeBrun, Kucherov and Milstein just finished a meeting this evening with Lightning general manager Julien BriseBois advising that Kucherov is asking for a trade. Kucherov told his teammates while on the plane.

They're currently on their way to Nashville for Saturday's game against the Predators.

Apparently, breaking the Lightning's all-time scoring record is about to walk out the door. Steven Stamkos left in free agency not long after he surpassed Martin St. Louis. Kucherov passed Stamkos last week.

Ironically, Stamkos is set to face the team as Kucherov wants out.

Even with how long negotiations have taken, this still comes as a whiplash of a report. For a time, it just seemed like that a deal was only a matter of time. It's the not the case, and Kucherov will be out of Tampa Bay soon.

Naturally, somewhere, the two sides could not agree to a number. At this time, we don't know if it was due to average annual value or length or both. But the impasse became too much.

What lies ahead is the uncertainty of what the Lightning will be able to do in a trade. There's also seeing eventually how the Lightning offense will function without him. He's the engine. It all starts with him.

As usual, he's been having a good year. In 12 games, he's posted four goals and 11 assists for 15 points.

This doesn't mean this team is short on stars. We all know that's far from the case, but the whole offense is structured with the reigning Hart Memorial Trophy winner in mind.

Naturally, this story is still developing. We'll see how this unfolds over the next several days and weeks.
