Victor Hedman gets big moment with Lightning overtime goal vs Kraken

Some moments are just meant to be, and you can't help but be happy to see the Lightning captain get the moment that he did

Some things are bigger than hockey. Sometimes, those bigger-than-the-game moments get to happen within the game itself.

On Thursday, that bigger moment belonged to the captain of the team, Victor Hedman.

It was almost as if this moment had to happen when it did. It was almost as if it wouldn’t be right for him to have any old goal in a game. He was being handed a special moment after everything he had gone through.

But for greater context, the Tampa Bay Lightning had to fend off the Seattle Kraken long enough to make it happen. They held a lead twice, and both times, the Kraken were able to tie things up each time.

Deciding this game would require overtime.

As the overtime period got underway, Hedman hadn’t scored a goal since Feb. 28, 2026. That was his only goal of the previous season. He battled through injuries. He had to step away to address his mental health.

In the end, he's only human. It doesn't matter if you're a hockey player, even one who is a future Hall of Famer. Sometimes, you need help, and he was brave enough to admit it.

His 33 games played were the fewest he had ever played in a season.

Now, he's in a better place mentally, and he was able to come back fresh and ready to jump into action.

While his role has a changed coming into this season, Hedman has seen action in every game. He had picked up a couple of assists so far while also playing solid defense.

But that first goal since he had to step away still awaited him. No better time to score it than in overtime.

You can’t help but love that moment for him. You can’t help but feel some emotion when it clicks in your mind who scored that goal and what it means for him to have had that goal.

The captain got to have a moment fit for someone of his stature. It was a long time coming.

As a nod to the moment, the writers named him the first star of the game.

Much didn’t go right for the Lightning. Once again, they didn’t on the power play. They’re still having trouble winning faceoffs. For a night, that can take a back seat.

They got the win, and it’s because Hedman got his moment. If that’s what it took to allow it to happen, then so be it. Very few would want the outcome to have gone any other way.

You like to think that this could be the start of something big for him this season. Perhaps it’s some sort of spark. We’ll know in time, but regardless, it’s a moment showing he has overcome adversity. It's a moment that even Hollywood wished it had thought of.
